Weather in California

Here's how I know I'm not in the midwest anymore:

Clerk: "Is it still raining outside"
Wife: "Well, it's drizzling"
Clerk: "What does 'drizzling' mean?"
Wife: "It's the midwestern word for what you Californians call 'rain'."
:)

Seriously, there was a pretty decent rainstorm here in the past couple of days (basically what you would expect in KY or PA every couple of months or so), but it was nowhere near the scale that the news made it out to be ("OMG, it's rain!!!! Everyone head for the hills!), or that some people made it out to be (Receptionist at doctor's office: "Wow, I can't believe you made your appointment today; I mean, it's raining out there!").

Though, I'm starting to believe that people who live in arid climates should be forced to drive in wet conditions before getting their license. It's one thing to not drive in the rain very often, it's totally different to not know how to drive in the rain. For too many people here, "driving in the rain" seems to mean one of the following:

Slow down to 20mph, often, without warning, and without a discernible reason (I saw water! and it was falling from the sky. OMGWTFBBQ!?!?!?!)

Drive as aggressively as possible; out of fear and panic (OMG, I'm so scared, I have to get off the highway, and my exit is only 2 miles away. Whatever can I do!?!?!?! I know, I'll cut Clark off!)

Do both at the same time (how that is possible, I don't know, but I've seen it)

Here's a tip people: Slamming on your breaks as you approach a puddle is a horrible idea.

I don't even want to imagine what would happen if it snowed out here :)

Chaotic "Vacation"

My "vacation" (the reason for the scare quotes will become apparent) has been two weeks of chaos and stress.

My maternal grandmother (my last remaining grandparent) is fading fast, and probably won't see another Christmas. She is living with my parents and needs a sitter during the day. She is unable to walk on her own, and can only feed herself half of the time. She has good days and bad, but even on her best days, she seems a pale shadow of the woman I remember. This was made, to me, all the more explicit considering that I hadn't seen her since last December.

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last month and had to have a double mastectomy three days before Christmas. Luckily, she was out of the hospital on Christmas Eve, but she's been in bed most of the time since then, and her new shape really seems to bother her; not to mention the fact that she cannot pick up her grandson.

And then, to make matters worse, my son was bitten yesterday by one of my in-laws' dogs. Clark attempted to take some of the Michael's food while he was eating, and Michael would have none of it. So, he reacted as any dog would to another dog attempting to steal food—he snapped at him. The problem, of course, being that Clark is not another dog. My mother-in-law grabbed Clark, and went upstairs to inspect his wounds, and Elizabeth woke me up, understandably hysterical.

We spent the entire day in the ER while they stitched up Clark's face. He had three large lacerations underneath his left eye, and two smaller wounds underneath his right jaw. He was very close to having lost an eye, or, worse yet, having punctured his right carotid artery.

So, to any of my friends in Louisville that I haven't yet seen, I wanted you to know that I haven't been ignoring you without cause :)

Edited to add:

Because I get asked this a lot

People often have trouble believing that you can be moral and non-religious at the same time—as if morals can only come from religion. I am a moral person, and I am an atheist. I do not believe in God; I do not believe in an afterlife; I do not believe in a soul.

Upon hearing that, many people follow up with something along the lines of: Well, if you don't believe in God, what keeps you from stealing, killing, etc.?

Because it makes rational sense to be moral:

I like existing. I really like existing. Death means more to someone who believes that there is nothing afterwards. Life is all I have, and once that is gone, I don't exist any more. I want to continue existing.

If I were alone, and never cooperated with other people, existing comfortably (or at all) would be difficult, if not impossible, as all of my time and energy would be devoted to finding food and water, and fighting off predators and competition. Therefore cooperation is good.

If I want other people to cooperate with me, there are essentially two ways I can elicit that cooperation:

Force them; show them that you will cause them harm if they do not cooperate.

Entice them; show them that things will be better if they do cooperate.

If I force them, then a large part of their energy will be focused on removing the threat (i.e. me), which is counterproductive, and, for obvious reasons, potentially dangerous to me. Additionally, a large part of my energy would have to go towards enforcing the threat; this is also wasteful. If, on the other hand, I entice them, and show them that the relationship is beneficial to the both of us, all of that energy that would have otherwise gone into fighting for and against my threat can now be channeled into more constructive endeavors. Everyone wins.

This is how I can be a moral person while simultaneously disbelieving in God.

Small language irony

While listening to a song (in Japanese), I came across a word that I knew that I knew, but that I couldn't remember. I absolutely hate it when I forget words in other languages. So, I fired up the Dictionary on my Mac, and typed in the word: 「わすれる」. Anyone who knows Japanese will immediately see the irony.

What was this elusive word that I had forgotten? I had forgotten the word "forget".

My First Earthquake.

Weeeeeeeeeeee :)

It turns out that it was a 5.6, centered a few miles from my apartment. At first, I thought it was thunder (yeah, right, they don't have weather out here); then I thought it was someone stomping around on the floor above us … but we're on the top floor. Then the swaying started, and then it was over. Elizabeth was a little on the scared side, and the cats were freaked out, but I was more excited than anything else.

GMail now supports IMAP. Thank the Google gods!

Just yesterday, I set up gmail on my wife's new iPhone, and had to use the POP option. POP is horribly cumbersome and is really only appropriate if you only read mail on a single computer. With IMAP, everything stays in sync and all is well.

But with over 2GB of mail in my Gmail, that first sync is a doozie :)

It has been forever and a day since I last updated this journal, and there are many reasons for that.:

Cross-country move.
Back in February, My wife (ecox) and I moved from our apartment in Mars, PA to San José, CA. All in all the move went smoothly, there were some slight hiccups where the cats were involved, but they came through unscathed.

I'm pretty satisfied with my new home, and really like the fact that I am now actually within biking distance of most things that I need, and am within walking distance of (real) mass transit. In PA, if I wanted to go into Pittsburgh, it meant getting in the car and driving for upwards of 30 to 45 minutes on some of the worst interstates I have ever seen. Here, if I want to go to San Francisco, I walk or bike a half-mile or so, get on a train, and I'm there in an hour.

The only thing that I really miss so far is weather (I'd kill for a good thunderstorm), but I'm told that that is common with transplants to the area.

New Job.
The reason for the relocation was a change in employment. I now work for Apple, Inc. For the most part, it is pretty much what I expected, and I seem to have settled in nicely. It's also nice to be working on the very software that I use personally; it gives one a sense of control. This is in stark contrast to working on cancer treatment software that, $DIETY willing, I'll never see any direct benefit from. Leopard and Xcode on the other hand are software in which I spend nearly every working minute using (and would were I not working for Apple).

Speaking of Leopard, I highly recommend that you go out and get it come the 26th. There are a ton of new features, and many great new technologies; Of course, I'm not allowed to discuss any of them until Leopard is actually in customers hands, so for the next week, you'll just have to take my word for it and trust that this is a solid upgrade to the Mac OS and it's principal development environment. A lot of work (and a lot of time away from spouses) went into making this the best Mac OS X yet.

New Child.
Last, but most assuredly not least: On April 10th, just shy of 2 months after moving to California, Clark S. Cox IV was born. He's now 6 months old, and is growing like a weed (that is, he's well on track to being as tall as or even taller than I): he fits into clothing designed for 1 year-olds despite being barely half that. If you'd like to see any pictures of him, there are plenty on my flickr page, and Elizabeth has posted quite a few to her livejournal.

Perhaps, I'll have a bit more time to post here, but I can make no promises.

Why is our country filled with hypocritical puritans?

Genarlow Wilson is in prison for "Aggravated Child Molestation", for a minimum of 10 years, and he will have to register as a sex offender after he is released. Sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? For someone to be guilty of child molestation, they must be a bad, evil, perverted person, right? He must have gotten what he deserved, right?

Wrong

What was is "crime"? He had consensual, oral sex with a 15 year old. (Ooh, that sounds like rape, let's burn him). The problem with this is that he was 17 at the time.

This minor had sex with another minor, and the rest of his youth is now forfeit.

Sometimes this country makes me so angry.

The Big News

After a long posting hiatus, many things have happened as life continued on. The most recent, and most dramatic of these is the realization that I am going to be a father.

... I'll pause a second to let that sink in ...

I am going to be a father. We found out a couple of weeks ago that we're nearly into our 2nd trimester. There's not much more information at this point, no known gender yet, etc. Well, whatever it turns out to be, looks like my life will be changing in some very large ways over the next 6½ months.

Both pairs of future grandparents seem quite excited, and at the rate they're buying baby things (especially Elizabeth's parents), we may have enough for ten babies.

For some reason, I had always assumed that, of my relatives close to me in age, I would be the last to procreate. I had assumed that my two just-older-than-me cousins would be first and second, and that my brother and just-younger-than-me cousin would be second and third—what a difference a year or two makes.

Oh well, I'm just rambling and thought I would share this bit of news among a slightly wider group of friends than the 20 or so people that currently know.

I'm going insane

This post will not make sense to those of you out there that don’t know C++, but for those that do, it is a sure sign of my impending insanity. This morning, Andrew, one of my coworkers, was doing a code-review on some code that I had written several months back, and came to me, asking what I was intending when I wrote this little gem:

template<typename WrappedInputIterator>
class stationary_iterator
{
public:
  typedef WrappedInputIterator                                              wrapped_iterator;

//stationary_iterators are *only* input iterators, regardless of the category
  //of the wrapped iterator.

... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

You read that right; it’s an iterator class that wraps another iterator class that doesn’t move. It doesn’t appear to have been a mistake, as it’s named “stationary”!, and the comments even point out that the increment operators are no-ops. I have no idea what I was thinking, nor do I have any idea how I intended to use this abomination, but there is is, stored in source control at work for all to see.

... I have no words.

Life changing events

When last we saw our intrepid hero, he was expressing unbridled joy at the moving in of his girlfriend. Well, not only has she moved in, but they have gotten married. Yep, Clark is no longer single, and Elizabeth no longer has the name with which she was born.

I asked her back on August 6th; and we were planning on getting married in November (on the 11th to be precise). That following weekend, we drove down to Louisville to see our friends and family. We broke the news to my parents in person, and there was much merriment (actually, my mother was very sleepy when we told here, and thought it was a dream the next day, so we got to tell her all over again).

When we told everyone about our plans to go to Germany for two weeks in December as our honeymoon, Elizabeth’s mother made a pretty astute observation: “If you’re getting married in November, what happens if you don’t have time to update the last name on Elizabeth’s passport.” Then, she also mentioned, in that very practical, German manner, that if we went ahead and got married immediately, then Elizabeth would be put on my health insurance, I would get a tax break, and our car insurance rates would drop (aww, isn’t it romantic?)

So, the Monday before we drove back to Pittsburgh, we went down to Louisville’s city hall, and were married by a Justice of the Peace.

We’re still having the ceremony on November 11th, though it’s just for show, and for the few friends that don’t know that we’re really already married, and then I’m taking an insane amount of vacation that I’ve saved up this year, (three weeks) to spend most of the month of December galavanting around Germany with my wife, meeting friends of hers, and a couple of my new family members. (I really need to brush up on my German before the trip)

This is marked as friends-only so that the surprise isn’t spoiled for the few friends of mine that don’t know I’m already married.

No longer friends-only, for obvious reasons

Clark dances the happy dance

Well, this is my last weekend living alone. Next weekend, i fly down to Louisville, rent a big moving van and come back with my girlfriend, her cats and all of her stuff. I'm a little nervous, as I've never had a live-in girlfriend, but I am also insanely excited. I feel like a kid in the week leading up to Christmas. Lately, my apartment has been feeling quite big and empty, and it was always a bit depressing that if I wanted to go see Elizabeth, I'd have to drive over 400 miles to do so.

*sqweeeeeeeeee* (ever seen a big, 2 meter tall guy squeal like a little girl?)

Well, That was an interesting weekend

It all began Thursday evening. I came home from work, and realized that I didn’t have enough clean clothing for my trip home to Louisville, so I did what any sensible person would do; I started a load of laundry. Upon waking up Friday morning, I went and got a fresh, warm pair of jeans out of the dryer, and went about my normal morning routine; I got my iPod, my keychain, and went to pick up my wallet and cell-phone. I couldn’t find either, and just as I was about to tear my apartment apart looking for them, I realized that they were already in my pocket—what a relief—that is, it was a relief until I realized that they were both quite warm; almost as if they had just been put through an entire wash and dry cycle—they had. So, I had to buy a new phone, as I didn’t want to make a 400 mile drive without a phone. (good thing Friday was payday).

Most of the weekend went off without a hitch. On Sunday, My parents, Elizabeth and I went and saw Star Wars, and went to Steak n’ Shake. After saying goodnight to my parents, and getting to Elizabeth’s apartment at about 2:30 AM, I noticed something was wrong. I said, and I quote, “Hey, um dear? Wasn’t my car right here?”. She called the cops, who were there in about 15 minutes (quite a long time, considering she lives less than two blocks from the substation). I gave them all the relevant information that I could remember, and they told me that they would put out a call, and that I should call them with any more information.

We went inside, and I sat down on her bed, with a bottle of Vodka, turned on the TV, and prepared for a long, depressing night. Not 15 minutes later, the cops were back, and said that my car was in the impound lot. Apparently the thieves made it as far as the alley behind the apartment, where they abandoned the car. Later, someone called the cops because the car was blocking traffic; so they towed it.

The officer assured me that I could pick it up the next morning (Monday), and that I wouldn’t have to pay to get it out, so, relieved, we went back inside, watched some TV, and went to bed. The next morning, we went to get my car out of impound, as I was supposed to be back at work the next day, on Tuesday, and had to get on the road. It seems that the cop forgot that Monday was a holiday … no car for me, thanks LMPD. When I finally got it out this afternoon, they charged me $105 to get it out, because, as they claimed, I had parked it illegally, blocking traffic. The moron behind the counter wouldn’t take no for an answer, even after giving him the report number and the cop’s name and number. I wasn’t interested in arguing, so I paid it and went to my car.

It was then that I almost felt sorry for the thieves … they were obviously retarded.

In their attempt to pop open the steering column to start it sans-key, they made not 1, not 2, but 3 unnecessary holes, and were never able to defeat the steering lock (which explains why they abandoned it). Additionally, they only took the $5 or $6 in quarters in my cup-holder, completely ignoring the $400 digital camera and the $80 iPod cradle sitting less than an inch from the change.

So, all in all, I had an interesting holiday weekend. I got to stay for an extra day, can now start my car with a screwdriver, and have a new story to add to my collection.

Ding Dong, the broadcast flag is dead

Common sense prevails.

Court yanks down FCC's broadcast flag

I particularly like the oral arguments of Judge Harry Edwards and David Sentelle. Said the former, "You're out there in the whole world, regulating. Are washing machines next?", which was followed, from the latter, by "You can't regulate washing machines. You can't rule the world."

Here is ArsTechnica's writeup

Tell it like it is

I found this via jwelch. Reading this woman's passion, and her raw truthfulness brought a tear to my eye. This is what we need from our politicians:

HJR 6 Speech by Representative Senfronia Thompson (D-Houston)

I have been a member of this august body for three decades, and today is one of the all-time low points. We are going in the wrong direction, in the direction of hate and fear and discrimination. Members, we all know what this is about; this is the politics of divisiveness at its worst, a wedge issue that is meant to divide.

Members, this issue is a distraction from the real things we need to be working on. At the end of this session, this Legislature, this Leadership will not be able to deliver the people of Texas, fundamental and fair answers to the pressing issues of our day.

Let's look at what this amendment does not do: It does not give one Texas citizen meaningful tax relief. It does not reform or fully fund our education system. It does not restore one child to CHIP, who was cut from health insurance last session. It does not put one dime into raising Texas' Third World access to health care. It does not do one thing to care for or protect one elderly person or one child in this state. In fact, it does not even do anything to protect one marriage.

Members, this bill is about hate and fear and discrimination. I know something about hate and fear and discrimination. When I was a small girl, white folks used to talk about “protecting the institution of marriage” as well. What they meant was if people of my color tried to marry people of Mr. Chisum's color, you'd often find the people of my color hanging from a tree. That's what the white folks did back then to “protect marriage.” Fifty years ago, white folks thought inter-racial marriages were a “threat to the institution of marriage.”

Members, I'm a Christian and a proud Christian. I read the good book, and do my best to live by it. I have never read the verse where it says, “gay people can't marry.” I have never read the verse where it says, “thou shalt discriminate against those not like me.” I have never read the verse where it says, “let's base our public policy on hate and fear and discrimination.” Christianity to me is love and hope and faith and forgiveness-- not hate and discrimination.

I have served in this body a lot of years-- and I have seen a lot of promises broken. I should be up here demanding my 40 acres and a mule because that's another promise you broke. You used a wealthy white minister cloaked in the cloth to ease the stench of that form of discrimination.

So, now that blacks and women can vote, and now that blacks and women have equal rights-- you turn your hatred to homosexuals-- and you still use your misguided reading of the Bible to justify your hatred. You want to pass this ridiculous amendment so you can go home and brag-- brag about what? Declare that you saved the people of Texas from what?

Persons of the same sex cannot get married in this State now. Texas does not now recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions, religious unions, domestic partnerships, contractual arrangements or Christian blessings entered into in this State-- or anywhere else on this planet Earth.

If you want to make your hateful political statements then that is one thing-- the Chisum amendment does real harm. It repeals the contracts that many single people have paid thousands of dollars to purchase to obtain medical powers of attorney, powers of attorney, hospital visitation, joint ownership and support agreements. You have lost your way-- this is obscene.

Today, you are playing to the lowest common denominator-- you are putting aside the real issues of substance that we need to address so that you can instead play on the public's fears and prejudices to deceive and manipulate voters into thinking that we have done something important.

I realize that gay rights are not the same as civil rights-- but I can guarantee you we are going in the wrong direction. I can not hide my skin color. In fact, in most of the South, people as pink as Rep. Wayne Smith were still Black by law if they had a great grandparent who was African. I was unable to attend an integrated and equally funded school until I got my Master of Laws degree. There were separate and unequal facilities for nearly everything.

I got second-hand textbooks even worse than the kind you're trying to pass off on every public school student next year. I had to ride to school on the back of the bus. I had to quench my thirst from filthy coloreds-only drinking fountains. I had to enter restaurants from the kitchen door. I was banned from entering most public accommodations, even from serving on a jury. I had to live with the fear that getting too uppity could get you killed --- or worse. I know what third-class citizenship feels like. In my first term, one of my colleagues walked up and down this aisle muttering about how Nigras should be back in the field picking cotton instead of picking out committees.

So, I have to wonder about Rep. Chisum's 3/5 of a person amendment. Some of you folks hid behind your Bible then, too, to justify your cultural prejudices, your denial of liberty, and your gunpoint robbery of human dignity.

We have worked hard at putting our prejudices against homosexuals in law. We have denied them basic job protections. We have denied them and their children freedom from bullying and harassment at school. We have tried to criminalize their very existence. But, we have also absolved them of all family duties and responsibilities: to care for and support their spouses and children, to count their family's assets in determining public assistance, to obtain health insurance for dependents, to make end-of-life or necessary medical decisions for their life partners--- sometimes even to visit in the hospital, even to defend our own country. And then, we can stand on our two hind legs and proclaim, “See, I told you homosexual families are unstable.” And nearly every one of you on this Floor has a homosexual in their extended families.

Some of you have shunned and isolated these family members. Some of you, even some of the joint coauthors, have embraced them within your own family for the essence of Christianity is love. Yet,you are now poised to constitutionalize discrimination against a particular class of people. I thought we would be debating real issues: education, health care for kids, teacher's health insurance, health care for the elderly, protecting survivors of sexual assault, protecting the pensions of seniors in nursing homes.

I thought we would be debating economic development, property tax relief, protecting seniors pensions and stem cell research, to save lives of Texans who are waiting for a more abundant life. Instead we are wasting this body's time with this political stunt that is nothing more than constitutionalizing discrimination. The prejudices exhibited by members of this body disgust me.

Last week, Republicans used a political wedge issue to pull kids-- sweet little vulnerable kids-- out of the homes of loving parents and put them back in a state orphanage just because those parents are gay. That's disgusting. Today, we are telling homosexuals that just like people of my ilk, when I was a small child; they too are second class citizens.

I have listened to all the arguments. I have listened to all of the crap. Mr. Chisum, is a person who I consider my good friend and revere. But, I want you to know that this amendment is blowing smoke to fuel the hell-fire flames of bigotry.

You are trying to protect your constituents from danger. This amendment is a CYB amendment for you to go home and talk about.

Were nuclear terrorist attacks legal before this treaty?
